1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper w/ 3.3L Subaru SVX – $18k in Seattle

Updated: See comments below post…

Here’s what appears to be a nice SVX Westy for sale that might be starting to get into the “great deal” price range.  I posted about this van a while back when it was for sale in SF (link) for $21k, but it now appears to be for sale in Seattle with an asking price of $18k.  This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with a 3.3L Subaru SVX engine, manual transmission with taller 3rd and 4th gears, solar set up and tons of other recent maintenance.  It is one of the oldest Westys I’ve seen with an SVX, but considering all that has been done to it mechanically, it’s hardly an ’84.  The body has 143k miles and the SVX engine has about 90k miles on it.  The one thing the listing has never stated, is IF it has upgraded brakes, which would be almost mandatory with this kind of horsepower. It does state it has larger wheels to accommodate bigger disc brakes, but not word if it actually HAS the larger disc brakes. However, a nice SVX conversion in a sub 200k mile body with full functioning kitchen and solar set up, all for under $20k, is kind of a good deal. Just gotta find yourself some arm rests for the stock ’84 front seats. Craigslist Link

    Hi Mike,

Do you know roughly how much it would be to have AC installed?

    • I think this well depend on a variety of factors, however it does sounds like it has the original in dash BEHR A/C controls, but I’m not sure how much of the original system remains. You best be would be to ask the seller what is left of the original A/C, then give the guys at Small Car Performance in Tacoma, WA a call and see what their thoughts are. There are of course other places that could do it, but I’m assuming you live in the Seattle area if you’re looking at purchasing this van. Good luck!

Sorry I meant to ask the question to the seller which I should have said Richard. I’ll followup via his CR link. Thanks for the info Mike!

    Hey Mike,

This is my van and I can’t believe I neglected to include that it does have the Big Brake kit!

I had lots of interest in California but it took me a few weeks to get an appointment at the Buslab for installing the catalytic converter and out of worries that this would still not satisfy the referee and to go visit some friends I have driven up north to Seattle.
