While I’m weary of anything before 1984 (I don’t really know why), this appears to be a great find priced right in the SF Bay area. Posted yesterday on craigslist is this 1982 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with only 129k original miles and a recent 1.6L turbo diesel motor. It has the South African grill and headlight kit, nice looking original orange paint (I think) and all of the appliances work. No word if the propane filler has been upgraded. Overall this looks like an amazing deal for a van in this region. The cool secret to buying a diesel westy already registered in California, is that if the engine ever goes ka put, you can swap in ANY gas motor you want, and you’ll never have to smog it. There are tons of gas conversions you can’t legally register in California that are great, like the Bostigs. But if the DMV thinks it’s diesel, you’ll (likely) never have to worry, even if you sell it!
SOLD! Some friends of mine purchased this yesterday, they are stoked!
