UPDATE! – As noted in the comments below, supposedly this van was on the Columbus craigslist for $7,500 recently, not the current asking price of nearly $11k.
This nice looking 1987 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper appeared on both Auto Trader and The Samba yesterday with an asking price of $10,870 and is located in Columbus, Ohio. It sounds like this van has gone through quite a few changes over the years, including a new engine and new odometer, so we’re not sure how many miles any piece of it really has, however the seller states roughly 200k on the body and 40k on the motor. There’s some minor seam rust, some of it sort of repaired, some of it not. It’s the 4 speed manual and reportedly shifts smooth through each gear. If the motor has good compression and stays cool, this might be a good find for this price range, especially in the upper midwest where most of these vans rotted away(road salt) long ago.
This one reminded me of the first and last time I got rolled in Vegas; found the listing on CL 12 hour after it was posted Wednesday night and emailed to ask about the 34k miles noted on the odometer and got a note back Thursday morning around 7 a.m. that stated:
“We do not know – we don’t think so. The engine was rebuilt in the 90’s, and the previous owner (not original owner) said they believe the odometer was turned back at time of rebuild.
We love the van, but it is time to move on… we are down-sizing. The van has been garaged for the past
We bought the van in 2000 with 20k miles. In 14 years we have put 14k additional, mainly weekend trips.”
Unfortunately I read her note at lunch and there was another one after it that indicated the van sold this morning; the fella who bought it had it posted on the samba by 2 p.m.
I’m used to the diesel westy and not this kind of life in the fast lane.
Sigh, 🙁

It was an even better deal two days ago when it was on Columbus Craigslist for $7500!
Thanks for the tip Jim! I had a look around all the Ohio craigslists and couldn’t find it. Now you know what they’re willing to take, unless they did some major work on it recently.
