Round 2! 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper Auction in Los Angeles

Relisted again on eBay is this 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper in original orly blue with 229k miles on the body, 50k miles on a rebuilt engine, manual transmission and everything is said to be working. This is another one of those instances where the seller doesn't do a good job at "selling" their vehicle, and the post is almost comes off as "I spent a bunch of money, it works, it's great, don't waste my time".  It's just not an enticing sell.  Be articulate, get creative, take more / better pictures, you're expecting to get close to 20 grand for it, not chump change. The VIN is provided (WV2ZB0257LH027343), but they've run out of their free Auto Check reports at eBay, so you'll have to find another means to do your homework, like CarFax.  At any rate, I think this has been up for sale more than once since I posted about it back in June, when it was on eBay with the same buy it now price of $17,900.  Last time around the top bid was only $9,100.  Any guesses on what it will be this time around?  The current auction ends on Sunday January 25th at 1:19pm PST. (original post here) (current eBay auction here).

All things considered, it does look like a decent late model Westy, though I'd make sure that whoever did the engine rebuild was qualified and offered some type of warranty, even if it has expired already.  The description states "it has two scratched in the body" though the pictures clearly show many, many imperfections and scratches in the paint.

Now that this site has been around for a while, it's cool to see when Westy get relisted, especially now that I've been doing my best to keep track of VINs.  Want to see if a van has been listed on here before? Just enter the VIN int the search box to the right.

Restored 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – $17,900 in Gresham, OR

Updated 1/8/15. (see bottom of post)

Original Post : Here's a beauty in the Pacific Northwest I don't think think I've seen before.  Fresh on craigslist yesterday is this very restored 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 238k miles and all kinds of new life put into her.  It has a rebuilt engine with 40k miles on it, but the seller states is a 2.0L?  Which is very uncommon, and maybe a Jetta engine? Most wasserboxers are either 1.9L or 2.1L, or built up to be larger than 2.1L, but I don't think I've ever heard of a 2.0L WBX.  Either way, the pictures show a well restored and good looking rig with new paint, bedliner on the rocker panels, fuel tank, fuel sending unit, power steering rack, brakes bushings, 15" wheels / tires and a new GoWesty tent canvas.  On the ends it's got GoWesty front and rear bumpers with a roo bar on the front with some fog lights and a spare tire carrier wing arm on the rear. Interior wise it's got newer tint, the extra double middle seat, later model front seats with the arms rests (original '84s didn't have arm rests) and a the dashboard cover with the cup holders and the map reading fold out table.  $18k is a tall order for an '84, but this one looks pretty primo.  Find it for sale in Gresham, Oregon. Craigslist Link

UPDATE - I got the VIN ( WV2ZB0250EH087628 ), more pictures and some additional info from the seller.  The mileage discrepancy on the Car Fax report is said to be due to the odometer being in KM's, which means this is likely a Canadian import.  The odometer picture I received reads 384 km.… Read More About This Westy

1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper w/ 2.2L Subaru & New Paint – $18k in Sacramento, CA

Here's a sweet looking deal for Central California.  Posted on craigslist last night is this 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with a fresh coat of paint and a 2.2L Subaru engine.  There's no stated mileage, but the owner did provide the VIN WV2ZB0254FH042340 so you can do your homework on AutoCheck or CarFax.  It's got a newer 3 window tent canvas, 50k or a rebuilt manual transmission, stainless exhaust and new catalytic converter, new radiator and a new battery. It also has a tow hitch, but didn't mention what the used it for.  Bikes, OK.  Boat? No so ok.  There's no side photo to show how much sag it may or may not have in the rear.  Considering there are 20 photos and no side shot, I'm a bit worried.  There's no mention of whether or not the sink, stove, fridge or propane tank work, or how well.  There's also a dash cover so we're not sure how weather the original dash is either.  However, I think the key points here are new paint & a Subaru 2.2L engine (CA Legal) for under $20k in California.  A good Subaru conversion is $14k, a good paint job is at least $4k- $6k.  Check it out for sale in Sacramento with an asking price of $17,900.  Craigslist Link - The Samba LinkRead More About This Westy

Price Drop! – 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 68k Miles – $17,500 in Klakamas, OR

I think I've seen this one for sale recently, and it looks like the seller has only updated the price field in their craigslist ad, and not the price listed in the copy.  Has anyone seen this van yet?  I wonder what it hasn't sold?  This rig is a 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with supposedly 68,000 original miles, stock 2.1L engine, stock manual transmission and fully functioning kitchen.  In fact, the seller claims the kitchen has only been used three times? I wonder if they're the original owner then? It also appears to have the 15in GoWesty wheels too, but otherwise looks mostly stock in the original silver paint.   The did provide the VIN WV2ZBO256LHO49057 so you can go do some homework.  It's also got manual windows and manual locks, which is rare for late model camper.  The price in the title says $17,500, the asking price at the end of the description says $19,500 or best offer.  Find it for sale on craigslist in Klakamas, Oregon. Price Drop 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia w/ 240hp SVX engine – $18,000 in Seattle, WA

Updated: See comments below post...

Here's what appears to be a nice SVX Westy for sale that might be starting to get into the "great deal" price range.  I posted about this van a while back when it was for sale in SF (link) for $21k, but it now appears to be for sale in Seattle with an asking price of $18k.  This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with a 3.3L Subaru SVX engine, manual transmission with taller 3rd and 4th gears, solar set up and tons of other recent maintenance.  It is one of the oldest Westys I've seen with an SVX, but considering all that has been done to it mechanically, it's hardly an '84.  The body has 143k miles and the SVX engine has about 90k miles on it.  The one thing the listing has never stated, is IF it has upgraded brakes, which would be almost mandatory with this kind of horsepower. It does state it has larger wheels to accommodate bigger disc brakes, but not word if it actually HAS the larger disc brakes. However, a nice SVX conversion in a sub 200k mile body with full functioning kitchen and solar set up, all for under $20k, is kind of a good deal. Just gotta find yourself some arm rests for the stock '84 front seats. Craigslist LinkRead More About This Westy
