Nice ’84 Westy Camper w/ 1.9L TDI Swap – $14k in South Florida

Sorry for the lack of posts fans, May was a busy month for me, and I took my first trip to Central America for a friends' wedding.  Surfed every day for almost 2 weeks, never once saw a Westfalia, but wow all those awesome Toyota and Nissan diesels that you can't get here.  On that note, I saw this find pop up fresh just moments ago, and if it's the real deal, it's worth checking out for sure.  This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper in Aussan Brown with a 1.9L TDI engine for a 2004 Jetta.  The problem is, the seller provided pretty much 0 details in both The Samba post, and the craigslist post.

The 2004 Jetta came with an electronically managed engine, and porting over this whole system to a Vanagon is very difficult to say the least.  There's a chance the engine is now using a mechanical injection pump, which is what many of the turbo diesel Vanagon swaps utilize. I'm not savvy enough to know by looking a the picture provided (below). There's also no note as to whether the transmission was regeared, or rebuilt for the swap.

At any rate, the photos show tell the story of a clean, well cared for '84 Westy Camper with likely original Aussan Brown paint, original curtains, screens, upholstery, original everything.  There's no mention of how well, or if at all, the kitchen appliances or propane function.  The main seal on the pop top is missing, and there's no pictures of the upstairs,  It looks like there was a seam rust repair near the rocker panel on the drivers side, so be sure to get the full scoop here, including a good look underneath. It also appears to have the old A/C ducting still installed, but no A/C in the engine bay, so you can probably just have all the old ducting removed and get more storage out of the deal.  No VIN provided by the seller, so all in all, this one is a mystery.

The main selling points here, are a good looking rust free Westy with a 1.9L TDI engine. At only $14k, this is going get a lot of eyeballs this weekend. What do you think it's worth?  Have you seen this Westy? 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper GoWesty 2.3L Engine + Warranty – $14k in Los Angeles

Could this be your cyber Monday special? Posted last night on craigslist and The Samba is this 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with a GoWesty 2.3L engine that's still got a year left on the warranty. The body is a bit rough, but mechanically this could be a sound rig to just swoop up and drive.  The asking price seems reasonable at $14k in the current market, and it might sell fairly quick.

The Awesome.

  • The GoWesty 2.3L engine is a nice upgrade from stock, and still under warranty. The get mixed reviews from mechanics and VW forum discussions, however from what I know, if you take care of it and treat it well, they can last for a long time.
  • The kitchen appliances are all said to work.  New water pump for the sink, fridge runs cold.
  • Karmakanix in Berkeley, CA has done most of the recent work. This is a good reputable shop.
  • Front suspension bushings and ball joints have all been done recently. This job is a pain in the ass and is common on all Westys. More piece of mind here.
  • Stainless steel exhaust and new CA catalytic converter.  Even has a nice picture of this.
  • The high end gold tint looks pretty good with that original ivory paint.
  • Yakima wide body brackets mounted on the top in the right places.  Always be sure to check the fiberglass around these for cracks, as it can happen.

Potential Sore Spots.

  • No notes on the transmission. If the body really has 324k on it, find it when/if the transmission was ever rebuilt. The GoWesty engine is a "bit" more powerful that stock, and therefore could possibly put more strain on the transmission. Worst case scenario you've got a trans rebuilt at a cost of $2k-$3k+, depending on what you get. But at that point, you should have a very reliable power train.
  • The body is a bit rough around the edges, with tiny bits of seam rust showing through here and there. Overall though, it looks pretty manageable.

1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 119k Miles – $13,900 in Los Gatos, CA

Happy Tuesday westy hunters!  Notice anything new today?  The site was long overdue for a face lift, so I finally got started on that yesterday. It's far from finished, however most importantly it is now "mobile responsive". Viewing on a phone? Tablet?  The site should automatically resize itself to your device!  At any rate, here's the first post for the new site.  This 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper showed up for sale on the SF Bay Area craigslist yesterday and could be a nice find for the mileage, condition and price range.  With only 119k original miles, this Westy got a rebuilt/new engine in 2012 (likely stock 1.9L) and features the standard 4 speed manual transmission.  According to the details, the sink, stove, fridge (and propane tank?) all work perfectly, and it sounds like it may even come with a propane heater of some type, with an added bonus of hardwood floors in the mid section. The original aussan brown paint looks to be in decent shape, as well as the pop top, canvas and seals. It sits on what appear to be the original 14" steel wheels with some slightly larger than average tires.  Only three pictures available, but the seller did provide the VIN so you can do some homework. While some will balk at paying $14k for a mostly stock 1984 Westy, this kind of rig with a fresh engine and well cared for appearance will sell quickly at that price in the San Francisco area.  What do you think it's worth?  Tell us in the comments below, or head on over to the individual posts about the Westy on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Google+ and share you wisdom there!… Read More About This Westy

1982 VW Vanagon 1.6L Diesel Westfalia – 90k Miles – $14k in Portland, OR

So sad and more common than we'd all like with Westys, the owner bought this van, then the rebuilt engine cost was too much for them, so now they're selling.  Your chance to win here.  These are slooooow, likely the slowest vehicle you will ever drive, but it is a small house that get's 25+mpg on the highway, so there are upsides.  This van is a 1982 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 98k original miles, freshly rebuilt 1.6L diesel engine, manual transmission, clean title, rust free, new pop top tent and otherwise appears all original and unmolested.  There's no VIN provided, and the seller didn't go into detail regarding kitchen appliance order, however $14k for a rust free, < 100k mile diesel Westy with a fresh rebuilt engine, in Portland, that's a good deal.  Check it out this weekend. 1989 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 168k Miles – $13,500 in Santa Monica, CA

Here's a fresh looking find in Southern California that appeared on craigslist last night.  This reasonably priced specimen is a 1989 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 168k miles, 3k miles on "another" (rebuilt?) 2.1L engine, manual transmission and some overall well kept looks.  The seller states the sink, fridge, stove all function and the pictures show a very clean interior, uncracked dashboard and clean engine bay.  Other than some rust spots here and there, could be a very nice Westy for their low asking price of $13,500, which will likely garner significant attention.  They didn't provide the VIN or any other history, so you'll definitely want to check up to ensure it's got a clean title with accurate mileage.
