1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 77k Miles – $13k in Kerhonkson, NY

Here's a hot find that popped up on craigslist just a few hours ago in New York state.  This 2 owner specimen is a 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with likely stock 2.1L engine, stock manual 4 speed transmission and appears to show in decent condition.  The seller states they are firm on the $13k asking price and cash and quickness take priority here.  Though the VIN is not provided, the seller does state the original owner purchased it in Germany, which is a bit tricky since it barely clears the 25 year rule.  There's no mention if the propane, stove, fridge or sink work, or how well, and the seller does mention there's some seam rust building in on the kitchen side (but no pictures?).   As far as maintenance, it is said to have a newer clutch and alternator, along with a custom hardwood floor upgrade. Check it out in Kerhonskson, New York.  Craigslist Link

I think the main pieces to this are.... Is the mileage accurate, does the kitchen equipment work, how bad is/was the mold and how bad is the seam rust. If the mileage is accurate, and the seam rust is repairable without welding, the kitchen works and the mold is minimal,$13k is a steal.  Are you going to see this Westy? Sorted 1984 Westy Camper Two Tone – $13,200 in Oakland, CA

Here's a sweet looking find that appeared on craigslist over the weekend, if you live in the SF Bay Area and you're looking for a Westy, this is one to check out.  This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with two tone paint and the Wolfsburg trim.  The van features stock 1.9L engine, stock manual transmission (replaced recently), no leaks, clean title and recently passed smog.  The current seller is a VW mechanic that has done a majority of the recent work in the past two years which included quite a laundry list of usual fixes like... ; belts, bumper ends, clutch hydraulics, coolant pipes, flushed and renewed the coolant, power steering fluid, and brake fluid, front blower, front brake hoses, front brakes(shoes, rotors, and calipers), fuel hoses in engine compartment to and from the tank, fuel pump, fuel tank reseal, oil pressure switch, pop top and luggage rack seals, radius rod bushings, rear hatch struts, rear hub bearings, rear wheel cylinders, roof seal, several coolant hoses, shocks, side view mirrors, skylight, stereo(w/ usb and aux input), catalytic converter, thermostat, tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints and water pump.

The mileage is unknown, and there's no VIN provided, so you'll really want to do your homework here to ensure it's everything it's stated to be.  It does appear there could be some seam rust brewing in the usual spot below the kitchen on the exterior, get a good luck at and understanding of this.  In one of the photos it does appear to have a bit of a rear sag, which most Vanagons and Westys get.  Many address this issue with the rear spring spacers, make your own out of cutting boards or buy a set at GoWesty for $40. Overall, this could be a a really great find for the Bay Area, especially if you can get the price down closer to $11k or $12k. Check it out in Oakland, CA with an asking price of $13,200. Craigslist Link

Hmmm. 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender $13k in Portland, OR

Here's an fresh interesting find in Portland, OR that showed up for sale on The Samba a couple hours ago.  This mostly stock looking van is a 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender with a salvage title, rebuilt 2.1L engine, manual transmission, 137k miles and newer, computer, brakes, starter, distributor, air flow meter and tires.  This model features A/C along with power windows and locks, though how well they worked was not specified. Seller claims they are a vehicle hoarder and their Westy must go.  All yours for only $13k.  Craigslist Link

Personally I would be concerned with a salvage title, however if this didn't have a branded title the seller could ask for at least $6k more, and probably get it.  If the frame is straight, there's no rust, no leaks (in, or out) no electrical quirks, it's probably good to go, especially since it was reported salvaged over 20 years ago. Here's the VIN if you'd like to check it our for yourself. ( VIN WV2TBO252LH061910 ).  If anyone in the area goes to see this, I'd love to hear about it.  What do you think it's worth?  Leave your wisdom in the comments below, or head on over to the discussion about this Westy on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Google +.… Read More About This Westy

1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender – $12,900 in Nashville, TN

This 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender just showed up on the Nashville, Tennessee Craigslist about an hour ago with an asking price of $12,900.  While this might be a high price, especially for the region, taking a close look at the photos and appearance of this van make it, at the very least, a nice clean rust free specimen. Originally a desert dweller from New Mexico, this Westy features the stock 1.9L engine, stock 4 speed manual transmission, 166k miles and aside from a hitch receiver and wheels, it looks to be all stock and original.  I wish the seller would have shared more detailed pictures of the upholstery and dashboard, as the sheets and covers could be hiding some significant wear.  The original tent cavas looks almost flawless, which is a great indicator of being well cared for.  The listing also states that the package comes with a coleman porta potty and fridge, however there's no evidence of these in the photos. I'm going to say this Westy is probably worth at least $10k, at least on the West Coast. Any takers?

Clean!! 1983.5 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – $12,495 in Tuscon, AZ

Here's a nice desert dweller that appeared on craigslist about an hour ago in Tuscon, Arizona. This van is a 1983.5 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 131k miles, stock 1.9L engine (first year of water cooled), stock automatic transmission. It appears to be mostly stock, with the exception of some GoWesty 15" wheels which come with some brand new Michelin tires.  There's no word on whether or not the propane tank, stove, fridge, sink, etc work, or how well. Overall, this looks like a very clean, rust free well kept early model Vanagon Westfalia. The original tent canvas looks great, the exterior and interior are close to showroom condition, the dashboard looks flawless (especially considering this thing has been living in sun country).  Find on craigslist in Tuscon, Arizona with an asking price of $12,495. Craigslist Link

Notes For Potential Buyers: Find out if/how well the kitchen appliances work.  Check for rust on the undercarriage.  Ask if the gas tank has ever been resealed, or if the fuel lines have been replaced. Check the front suspension bushings, ask when they were last replaced.  The desert is great for rust, but not for rubber.  Check window seals, door seals, etc for cracking.

Notes For The Seller:  Great pictures, but no VIN, title report or service history.  This is an amazing looking Westy.  A video of the engine starting, running, the van driving, and the kitchen appliances working. Read More About This Westy
