WOW ’84 Westy Camper w/ a Subaru 2.2L Kennedy Swap – $11k Texas

Updated 12/2 noon PST.  One of our users ran a Car Fax and claims it checks out. See the comments below the post.

BOOM!  Check out this screaming deal that just popped up for sale in Texas last night.  This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with a Subaru 2.2L engine, manual transmission and unknown mileage.  The engine and conversion are key here.  It appears to be done with the Kennedy Engineering kit, which means it "might" be California smog legal.  Usually a Subaru powered Westy that passes CA smog will sell for no less than $16k on the West Coast.

The appliances are all said to work. The paint and body look good, the top looks good, the interior looks good.  It is said to have been covered when not in use, and I'm not surprised. While it has what appears to be the original pop top tent, the interior upholstery looks newer.

The only possible issue I see based on the photos and description provided, is that it looks like maybe the front has been repainted at some point, or it wore a bra for a very long time. This could be signs of a fender bender, but maybe not? The seller provided the VIN WV2ZB0259EH007386 so you can run a CarFax report or similar to check up on accident history, mileage, etc.

Swoop it up soon in Austin, Texas for only $11,000.  Craigslist Link.  What do you think it's worth?  Have you seen it? Driven it? 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 224k Miles – $10,500 in Michigan

Here's a hot looking deal that's sure to move quickly.  Fresh on the Grand Rapids, Michigan craigslist an hour ago is this 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 224k miles, stock rebuilt 2.1L engine & manual transmission along with a clean title for only $10,500. The seller claims they are the original owner and they've recently added a new catalytic converter, springs and A/C overhaul.  They did provide the VIN ( WV2ZB0257LH022868 ) so you can do a Car Fax report, though they say one is already available.

There appear to be a few spots of rust, and dings, and no pictures of what the Michigan winters have done it underneath, but overall it shows very well for the asking price. It appears that all tables and curtains are still there and there's no visible mold on the pop top (with skylight!). The Orly Blue paint shines well, and the window seals, fiberglass bumpers and plastic all appear to have been taken care of.  There's no mention of if or how well the propane tank, water tank, sink, stove, fridge all work, though many sellers forget to mention these things.  While there is obvious rust on the passenger side rear, the photo containing the kitchen seam on the driver side isn't visible enough to say if it's got rust or not.  Also, there's no notes on when the engine or transmission were overhauled, it could have been recent, or over 100k miles ago.

If this van is 100% legit and runs, drives, doesn't leak or overheat, shifts well, etc, it's priced at about half of what it would sell for on the West Coast. As I mentioned yesterday, I'd suggest always viewing a van in person before handing over the cash. At this price and short description, it's approaching potential scam territory, so I'd suggest not wiring any money in advance. 1984 Westy Camper w/ Tiico Engine and Locking Rear Diff – $11k in Phoenix, AZ

This one is definitely a bit rough around the edges, but comes with some nice features, including a Tiico engine conversion. This van is a 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with a 2.0L VW/Audi engine with roughly 40k miles on it and a manual transmission with a rear locking differential.   If you live in California and plan to register it there, make sure all the correct parts were used so it will pass a smog referee, as you'll likely need to get this CARB certified, check this out for more info.  It comes with a ladder, two batteries, a 1300 watt inverter and the fridge is said to work all 3 ways (nice!).  It also appears to come with a full length awning and possibly 3 sets of rack tabs mounted to the pop top.  It's the original tent canvas, but does show nicely, which is a good sign this van was reflectively well cared for. The seller didn't provide the VIN, so you'll definitely want to ask about that one so you can do a title check.  Find it for sale in Phoenix, AZ with an asking price of $11k. Craigslist Link

If this specimen has been a lifetime desert dweller, it could be well worth the $11k.  Go find a new slider door, give it a new paint job and new upholsetry and you could have yourself a show worth Westy with some unique powertrain features (engine and diff lock).

Motivated Seller! 1984 Westy Camper – $11,500 in Palm Harbor, FL

Starting off Monday's string of Westys for sale is this 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with stock 1.9L engine, stock automatic transmission, 154k miles and everything works.  The seller provided the VIN so you can do a title check ( WV2ZB0254EH000605 ), and best of all they are willing to do a long distance skype/facetime viewing of this rig. According to James everything works perfectly inside and out and it runs great.  My only question is the current suspension and wheel set up, as it appears to be custom and is sitting a bit on the lowered side of things.  Check it in Palm Harbor, Florida with an asking price of $11,500.  Craigslist Link

Nice! 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 121k Miles – $10,500 in Arcata, CA

Here's another hometown find up here on the north coast that showed up on craigslist yesterday.  This van is a 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with stock 1.9L engine, stock manual transmission, 121k miles and appears to have been well cared for.  In recent times this Westy has seen new brakes, brake lines, fuel pump, alternator, 3 window tent canvas, pop top seals and an awning.   It's got a recent SMOG certificate and is ready to go! Check it out in Arcata, California with an asking price of only $10,500.  Craigslist Link

The original UPS brown paint sports some pin striping and has aged rather well.    According to the seller all of the kitchen equipment works, which is rare in a 30 year old Westy. It's got a couple of Yakima wide body brackets mounted to the cargo section above the front seats, be sure to check for cracks in the fiberglass around these.
