1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 224k Miles – $10,500 in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Here’s a hot looking deal that’s sure to move quickly.  Fresh on the Grand Rapids, Michigan craigslist an hour ago is this 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 224k miles, stock rebuilt 2.1L engine & manual transmission along with a clean title for only $10,500. The seller claims they are the original owner and they’ve recently added a new catalytic converter, springs and A/C overhaul.  They did provide the VIN ( WV2ZB0257LH022868 ) so you can do a Car Fax report, though they say one is already available.

There appear to be a few spots of rust, and dings, and no pictures of what the Michigan winters have done it underneath, but overall it shows very well for the asking price. It appears that all tables and curtains are still there and there’s no visible mold on the pop top (with skylight!). The Orly Blue paint shines well, and the window seals, fiberglass bumpers and plastic all appear to have been taken care of.  There’s no mention of if or how well the propane tank, water tank, sink, stove, fridge all work, though many sellers forget to mention these things.  While there is obvious rust on the passenger side rear, the photo containing the kitchen seam on the driver side isn’t visible enough to say if it’s got rust or not.  Also, there’s no notes on when the engine or transmission were overhauled, it could have been recent, or over 100k miles ago.

If this van is 100% legit and runs, drives, doesn’t leak or overheat, shifts well, etc, it’s priced at about half of what it would sell for on the West Coast. As I mentioned yesterday, I’d suggest always viewing a van in person before handing over the cash. At this price and short description, it’s approaching potential scam territory, so I’d suggest not wiring any money in advance. What do you think it’s worth?  Let us know in the comment below, or head on over to the individual posts about this Westy on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Google+ and share your wisdom there.

  1. Called the seller, a guy answers the phone and says he is a friend of the seller. He is very hesitant about my questions regarding the rust issues, he goes on to say well she had a guy that came over to fix some surface rust here and there, but it looks ok. never bothered to tell me exactly where it is etc..goes on to say well I don’t want to waste my time telling people if they are far away and not able to see it in person. Best advice if you are interested in this westy, unless you can see it in person and are a local don’t waste your time. It is not as nice as it appears and most likely priced just right and not a good deal.
