It’s not too hard to find a Westy with an asking price north of $40k, especially a Syncro (4wd) model. They are out there, some are definitely not worth the money, some likely are, and can often have $70k+ in overall invested. There’s often no way to really know, however this one today caught my eye and I felt was worth mentioning. The van is a 1988 VW Vanagon Syncro Westfalia with 130k miles and a rare 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel (non injection) engine with only 1,000 miles on it. This engine is sweet because it has a little more power than the trasionally used 4 cylinder engine, but is still a mechanical diesel, rather than an electronically injected diesel, which should make it more reliable, as there are less pieces to fail. It also comes with hydraulic motor mounts, which are another necessity for the vibration of a diesel engine swap. However, on the downside, it’s got the raised engine lid, so you’ll need an extra mattress to full take advantage of the lower bed.
The van has seen quite a lot of upgrades and additions, I’d check out the full craigslist post for the details, however here’s a short list. Front and rear lockers, axles, cv joints, bushings, wheel bearings, Old Man Emu shocks and struts, new front and rear brakes, new 3 window tent, Mercedes wheels, GoWesty bumpers, 12V fridge, dual batteries and a 1 year old windows out paint job. Find it for sale on Craigslist in Hood River, Oregon for $48k. Craigslist Link
We are interested in your westfalia. Is it still for sale? Does it sleep four? Why are you selling it? We could come by tomorrow (Sunday, June 18) to see it if you are available.
