Have we lot our minds? Usually I like posting about vans that have the “potential” to be a decent deal, today is the opposite. This 1987 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper appears to be all original with a stated 59k miles and is for sale at a dealer in La Vergne, Tennessee for a mere $44,000. If this was a stock 4wd syncro, the price could still be high for a West Coast market, let alone Tennessee.
The pictures show an almost showroom perfect Westy, with even the undercarriage looking quite stellar. However, there’s no details surrounding VIN ( ) or a title report. There’s also no records of maintenance. It’s likely the fuel lines and many of the rubber mechanical parts are going to need replaced, even if it only has 59k original miles. Just to get this vehicle “road safe” might be quite an undertaking.
There’s no notes as to whether the propane, stove, fridge or sink work. Most of those original Dometic fridges are only still working if they’ve been used at least once or twice a year. After a closer inspection, in my opinion the passenger rear quarter panel looks to have been repainted or replaced. Something doesn’t quite match with the rest of that side. Are stock 2wd Westys really fetching these kinds of prices? Maybe the dealer is after some local Nashville famous musician money? I guess we’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens.
The actual dealer listing can be found here, Auto Trader here and the eBay listing is here.
