Here’s another rare syncro at a reasonable price up for sale in Central California as of yesterday. List on both Craigslist and The Samba is this 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro (AWD) Westfalia Camper with 200k miles on the body and 100k miles on the stock 2.1L engine. It features power windows, power locks(did ’87s have power locks?) and awning, newer 3 window tent canvas, thule rack set up, receiver hitch and a wide range of upgrades in recent years including; water pump, coolant lines, exhaust, catalytic converter, fuel lines, 15″ wheels, tires and some other odds and ends. The seller states the fridge works on electric, but did not test on propane. I don’t get this, and I hear it a lot. Put some propane in your tank, find out if it leaks, try to spark the fridge, it’s not too hard, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. The original Dometic fridge in my ’85 Westy still works on propane and I LOVE IT. We can go to the store, farmers market, etc, and not have to head home right away cause it just goes in the fridge. Want a cold beer when you’re done with your 3 hour surf session? No need for a messy cooler, just grab a brew out of your propane powered fridge. Ok. anyhow… Oh, the front heater fan isn’t working, which might be a labor intensive job, not sure, and the sink pump needs replacing too.
A note for potential buyers: What did they tow with this? The ad says “trailer”, so be careful here, as Westys were not really designed to tow much. A bike rack or very light trailer might be ok, but not recommended. Of course there’s my ever growing very short list of things I would look at when buying a Westy.
A note for the seller: Why You No VIN? A VIN and title history report from a service like Car Fax would go a long ways in attracting buyers. This looks like a really great deal, and it one of the only sub $30k syncro westy campers I’ve seen for sale in this area recently(aside from this one). More pictures! Undercarriage? Tent Canvas? Any extra syncro goodies? (lockers, decoupler, etc)
I’m new to Grass Valley, CA. Where can I get my 1985 Westy propane tank filled in the Grass Valley-Auburn area?
BTW-do you recommend any shops in the area?
