BOOM! Here’s a hot post for your Friday Westy hunt. This specimen popped up on the Boulder, CO craigslist yesterday and is sure to be getting some views and offers over the weekend. Check out this 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Camper with stock 2.1L engine, stock 4+low manual transmission, rear differential locker and estimated to be just under 200k miles on the chassis. It’s definitely rough around the edges and the seller does go a considerable distance to list various fixes and known issues, however mechanically it is represented as sound and recently passed smog. In the past year it received significant drivetrain work including rebuilt transmission, new clutch, flywheel and shift rod receiver, new drive shaft, new rear right axle, new differential lock valve and some miscellaneous other fixes. The seller mentions that the speedometer cable was broken and had to be replaced, so the mileage on the odometer is inaccurate. Would love to get a VIN and see how close the records are to it’s current stated mileage.

While the seller mentions it comes with refrigerator, sink and table, there’s no mention of the stove or propane set up, or how well any of it works. If I was going to look at this syncro, I’d first get the VIN and do a CarFax check to dig into its history a bit, and also see if the estimated mileage is within reason. I’d then be sure to check for rust in the kitchen seam under the RV hookups, as there’s no pictures of this, and it is stated there is “seam rust”. Next, I’d be sure to drive it for at least 15 minutes in stop and go traffic to see how hot it gets, ensuring the gauge doesn’t get too far above the bubble. Do some sharp turns U turns) and see if you hear any weirdness coming from underneath, or if you have ample to time experiment, check this out or read this forum thread.
