1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia, Restored

This is just a unique one, folks. This 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia is listed for sale in San Diego, California for $35,000.

The seller provides details of a recent complete tear-down inside and out. Following minor rust repair, the seller states the Westy was primed and sprayed with Monstaliner, giving the vehicle and rugged, textured paint job. The tan-colored paint is accented with yellow, orange and red pin-stripping. It looks pretty cool.

In addition to the body work, the Vanagon is powered by a 1996 Subaru Legacy motor with 8k miles after rebuilt heads and all new timing components and rebuilt automatic transmission with taller “freeway flyer” gears. The odometer reading is reported at 150,000 miles.

The seller warns that the engine swap is not CA smog legal.

Many new items listed by the seller, including rubber, suspension, brakes, pop-top canvas, truck fridge, diesel camping heater, 2x 100W Renogy solar panels with Wanderer charge controller and 100AH lithium house battery. Fiamma F45s awning, and bluetooth stereo with speakers.

The seller warns that the engine swap is not CA smog legal. Then how can it be titled and licensed in California?

    • I believe that is what they want to make clear: It can’t be.
