The first years of the water cooled Vanagon were 1983.5 – 1985 and have generally been less expensive when compared that 1986 – 1991 vanagon, mainly due to the engine size and cooing systems. However in recent months, I’ve seen a trend of rising prices for these early wasserboxers. This particular 1985 Vanagon Westfalia w/ manual transmission was posted up for sale on craigslist yesterday for $12,950 (now $10,900)by a seller in Santa Cruz, CA, and seems to be a decent price for the region. (compere it this similar van in Sausalito for $2k more) The details state that this van has been either an Arizona or California resident most of it’s life, however Santa Cruz can definitely be a more rust prone environment. It sounds like various engine and body work has been done within the past 30k miles and the seller states it is mechanically sound. The paint and interior appear to be good shape for a 30 year vehicle, you can even see some shine left in the rear hatch in one of the photos. If it’s got a clean title and the engine stays cool, this is a pretty good deal.
Wow, they just dropped the price to $10,900? The must need to sell it soon.
