1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper w/ Subaru SVX Engine – $19,500

Here’s a nice looking find for the midwest Westy fans that showed up for sale on The Samba classifieds yesterday.  This van is a 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper with 172k miles on the odometer, manual transmission and a nice looking Subaru 3.0L 3.3L SVX engine conversion with approx 166k miles on it(the engine).  No word of when the swap was done or if the parts used would allow it to pass a California Smog referee.   The seller notes that “It has been extensively restored and lovingly maintained by anal-retentive aircraft mechanics. It has lived inside an airplane hangar for the past 15 years.”  It comes with color coordinated curtains, new upgraded stereo and the fridge, stove and sink all work along with a new propane tank.  The van is described as having no rust and no accident history, you could do an Auto Check report as the provided the VIN vw2zb0257fh021580.  Find it for sale in Saint Charles, Missouri with an asking price of $19,500. A note to potential buyers : If you’re in a state that has strict emissions regulations like California, make sure the components used in the SVX swap will get you over any hurdles in your state.  SVX swaps are great when done right, though you do loose a couple inches of clearance in the back.  With 230hp, you may want to upgrade the brakes if they haven’t been already, though know that you’ll have to find some 1986 or later spindles, which are hard to come by.  Otherwise, by the pics and description, this looks to be a nice find for under $20k. A note for the seller: Would love to know more about the engine swap and if the parts used would make it CARB compliant.

  1. Thanks for the catch! I corrected it.

  2. I think the SVX might be 3.3L. I agree it looks like a good buy!
