1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper – 170k Miles – Auction in Connecticut

Who’s afraid of a little seam rust and a head gasket issue?  Well, most of us, but this one looks like it would be worth checking out if you’re in the northeastern US and looking for a bargain.  This van is a 1985 VW Vanagon Westfalia camper with 170k miles, stock 1.9L engine, stock manual transmission, some seam rust, possible head gasket issues and likely some other quirks.  According to the Auto Check report, this is likely being sold by the 2nd owner and the van has been registered in Connecticut since it landed in a US port in 1985.

Why I’m posting about this Westy? It’s a no reserve auction and someone just wants to get rid of it, therefore you could snatch it up for a low price ($3k anyone?).  Put $1k into seam rust, new pop top seals (~$200), fuels lines and tank reseal (~$500), a new rebuilt engine (~$7k) and you’ve got a Westy that could potentially criss cross the continent for years without significant mechanical maintenance. Every one of these is a crap shoot, but this one does appear to be well taken care of, and looks pretty good for an east coast vehicle. Might be worth a restore. The eBay auction ends on Sunday, January 4th at 8pm PST.  eBay Link

  1. After 32 bids from 13 bidders, someone towed this away for $6,100. Would love to hear how it turns out!
